How to Use an InBody Scan to Track Your Fitness Progress
The scale only tells you one number. An InBody scan tells you the full story — muscle mass, body fat, water balance, and more. Here's how to use it.
An InBody scan uses bioelectrical impedance to measure your skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, water balance, and visceral fat level in about 60 seconds — giving you a complete picture of body composition changes that a bathroom scale completely misses. This is especially important during body recomposition, when you may be gaining muscle and losing fat simultaneously while your weight stays the same. For meaningful progress tracking, scan every 4-8 weeks under consistent conditions (same time of day, hydration level, and fasting state).
The Scale is Lying to You
You’ve been training consistently for six weeks. You feel stronger, your clothes fit differently, and people have commented that you look leaner. You step on the scale and… it hasn’t moved. Or it went up.
This is one of the most discouraging moments in fitness, and it happens to almost everyone. The problem isn’t your effort — it’s that a scale only measures total body weight. It can’t tell the difference between muscle, fat, water, and bone.
An InBody scan can.
What is an InBody Scan?
An InBody scan uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to measure your body composition in detail. You stand on a device barefoot, grip hand electrodes, and in about 60 seconds you get a full breakdown of:
- Skeletal muscle mass — How much muscle you’re carrying
- Body fat mass — How much fat tissue you have
- Body fat percentage — Fat as a proportion of total weight
- Total body water — Hydration levels (intracellular and extracellular)
- Segmental lean analysis — Muscle distribution across your arms, legs, and torso
- Basal metabolic rate — How many calories your body burns at rest
- Visceral fat level — The dangerous fat around your organs
This is dramatically more useful than stepping on a bathroom scale.
Why Body Composition Matters More Than Weight
Consider two people who both weigh 170 pounds:
- Person A: 140 lbs lean mass, 30 lbs fat (17.6% body fat)
- Person B: 125 lbs lean mass, 45 lbs fat (26.5% body fat)
Same weight. Completely different bodies, health profiles, and appearances. The scale treats them identically. An InBody scan shows the full picture.
The Recomposition Effect
When you start training — especially if you’re new — your body often gains muscle and loses fat simultaneously. This is called body recomposition. On the scale, these changes cancel each other out. Your weight stays the same (or even increases) while your body is dramatically improving.
Without a body composition measurement, you’d think nothing is happening. With an InBody scan, you can see: “I gained 3 pounds of muscle and lost 4 pounds of fat.” That’s excellent progress that deserves celebration, not discouragement.
How to Read Your InBody Results
The Key Numbers
Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM): This is the muscle you can build through training. More muscle means higher metabolism, better performance, and a leaner appearance. You want this number to go up over time.
Body Fat Mass: The total weight of fat in your body. You generally want this to decrease (unless you’re intentionally in a gaining phase). Combined with SMM, this tells the real story.
Body Fat Percentage: More useful than body fat mass alone because it’s relative to your size. Based on ACSM body composition guidelines, general health ranges are:

These are guidelines, not judgments. Your ideal range depends on your goals and lifestyle.
Segmental Lean Analysis: Shows whether your muscle is evenly distributed. Many people have significant left-right imbalances they’re not aware of. This data can inform training adjustments — if your left leg has noticeably less muscle than your right, your trainer can program unilateral exercises to correct it.
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): The calories your body burns just existing. This number increases as you gain muscle, which is one reason strength training is so effective for long-term weight management.
What to Focus On
Don’t obsess over every number. Track these three over time:
- Skeletal muscle mass — Is it increasing?
- Body fat percentage — Is it trending in the direction you want?
- The ratio between the two — This is the real measure of progress.
How Often Should You Scan?
For Most People: Every 4-8 Weeks
Body composition changes are slow. Scanning weekly will just show noise from hydration fluctuations. Monthly scans give you enough time between measurements to see real changes.
For Competition Athletes: Every 2-4 Weeks During Prep
During an active competition prep, more frequent scans help your coach make precise adjustments to your nutrition and training.
For Baseline: Once Before Starting a Program
If you’re beginning a new training or nutrition program, get a scan before you start. This gives you an objective starting point to compare against.
Getting Accurate Scans
InBody scans are sensitive to hydration and timing. For consistent results:
- Scan at the same time of day — Morning is ideal, before eating
- Stay hydrated normally — Don’t chug water right before, but don’t be dehydrated either
- Avoid scanning after a workout — Blood flow shifts can affect readings
- Use the bathroom first — Bladder volume affects the measurement
- Wear minimal clothing — No shoes, no heavy jewelry
- Wait 2-3 hours after a large meal
- Avoid alcohol the night before — It causes dehydration that skews results
The most important rule: be consistent with your conditions. Research on BIA accuracy shows that while individual readings may have some margin of error, consistent measurement conditions make the technology highly reliable for tracking changes over time. If you always scan at 8 AM on a Saturday before eating, your results will be comparable over time even if they’re not perfectly “accurate” in absolute terms.
Using Your Results to Guide Training
Your InBody results should inform your approach:
If muscle mass is low and body fat is high: Focus on strength training 3-4x per week with moderate cardio. Eat at maintenance calories or a slight deficit with high protein (0.7-1g per pound of bodyweight).
If muscle mass is good but body fat is higher than you want: You have a solid foundation. Adjust nutrition to create a moderate caloric deficit while maintaining training intensity.
If both are low (you’re underweight): Focus on progressive strength training with a caloric surplus. Prioritize protein and recovery.
If you’re seeing muscle loss: You may be in too aggressive a caloric deficit, not eating enough protein, or doing too much cardio relative to strength training. Adjust.
